Beard Trim or Clean Shave: A Stamford Barber’s Take
Both are good options. Which one is right this week depends on your face, your job, and how much maintenance you want to sign up for.
The beard trim versus clean shave question comes up in the chair every week at Gentlemen’s Quarters. There is no right answer, but there is a right answer for you, and it depends on three things.
First, the shape of your face. A beard adds weight to the jaw. If your jaw is narrow, a trimmed beard can balance it. If your face is round, a tight line along the cheekbone can sharpen it. A clean shave shows the bone structure you have. Frank looks at the face before the clippers come out.
Second, the maintenance you will actually do. A clean shave is daily work. A beard trim is every two to three weeks. If you do not want to shave every morning, keep the beard and get it lined. If you like the clean morning routine, take the shave.
Third, the line. A beard that is grown out but unlined looks unfinished. A two-minute neckline and cheek line, done in the shop, is what separates a beard from a project. Most customers come in for a beard trim and leave surprised by how much the line changes the look.
Kyle cuts a lot of the younger beards in the shop. He keeps them tight and natural, not sculpted into a shape the face did not ask for. The goal is a beard that looks like yours, not like a magazine’s.
If you are undecided, sit in the chair and ask. Bring a photo of where you want it to end up. The trim or shave decision is easier when the barber can see the goal.
